ReWa Operations
Department
The Operations Department is responsible for operating and maintaining
the Authority’s treatment facilities in a safe, cost-effective, and
environmentally sound manner. With a staff of highly trained, state-certified
operators and maintenance technicians, the treatment facilities employ state-of-the-art
practices to produce three beneficial end products:
- Clean water, treated to nearly drinking water standards. This
water then supplements the flow of local rivers, where it supports aquatic
life and helps other communities downstream to enjoy an abundance of water
for recreational uses and production of drinking water.
- Biosolids, a nutrient-rich, environmentally sound organic
fertilizer that is used by local farmers to grow feed crops for their cattle. Through
cooperative efforts, this program saves valuable landfill space and helps
minimize costs for ratepayers. Area farmers benefit by collectively
saving hundreds of thousands of dollars each year by avoiding the use of
chemical fertilizers.
- Methane gas, a by-product of the treatment process. This
clean-burning gas is recycled to provide the heat needed to support the
biological treatment processes at each plant.; The recycled methane
not only reduces energy costs, but conserves millions of cubic feet of
our country’s natural gas supply each year. As an environmental
partner, ReWa is currently exploring additional beneficial uses for its
surplus of clean methane gas.
